Playwriting Every Day in November Day 17

Challenge: Holidays

MARCIA is in the kitchen, preparing Thanksgiving dinner. She is responsible for the turkey, mashed potatoes, and the pumpkin pie, along with the table setting, which is already mostly complete. As she prepares she hums and dances to music. We are with her for a few moments before the apartment door opens and FIONA comes barreling through, followed by LAUREN, weighed down with cranberries, green beans, veggies for a relish tray, and dinner rolls.

LAUREN
Fiona, please don’t run around the apartment, your grandmother is busy!
(LAUREN puts the cranberry sauce in the fridge and kisses MARCIA on the cheek.)
Hi mom. James is coming a little later, but I thought we would come to help with the cooking. Is Mark here yet?

MARCIA
No, you know your brother. It will be a miracle if he’s on time, much less early.

LAUREN
Hm. And is he bringing that girl?

MARCIA
You mean his finance? Yes, I believe she’s attending.
