Playwriting Every Day in November Day 22

Challenge: Left Coast Theatre Prompt - The Day After

FIONA is 18, it’s the day after her prom. She is looking a little worse for wear, but is glowing. MARCIA is making tea for the two of them.

FIONA
You should have seen me, grandma! Shelby asked me to dance, and I played it so cool, but I was like, freaking out! And we danced to an upbeat song and then there was a slow dance, and I was afraid to ask, but Shelby just put her arms around me and asked - “should you lead, or should I?”

MARCIA
Sounds like you had a great night.

FIONA
It was, oh god, I sound just like a cliché I was going to say magical, what is wrong with me?

MARCIA
Not sure anything is wrong with you. I would guess you are uncomplicatedly happy. It’s not something people experience often, but it is exhilarating from what I remember.

FIONA
I do feel really really good.
(in a whisper, as if anyone else could hear)
We kissed! I had my first kiss and prom with the love of my life!

MARCIA
That would certainly do it.

FIONA
How did you know that grandpa was the one?

MARCIA
To be honest with you, Fee, it was something that snuck up on me. We dated for a long time before I thought it was anything serious. Actually, we broke up for a little bit because his sister was getting married and I wasn’t ready to take the step to be his plus one. But… we found each other again and… we fell in love.
