2022 Playwriting Every Day in November Day 13: Abscission

Prompt: Abscission has many different meanings depending on if you are talking about botany, zoology, mycology, cell biology, or rhetoric, but the basic meaning to to cut off or discard something that is not - or no longer - useful.

RUTH
I have really learned a lot, and you have been really great. You’ve stuck with me through so much and I truly appreciate that, but… I’m sorry, I just don’t think this is working anymore.

MARGO
Is it something I said? Or did? Why all the sudden?

RUTH
I’ve been dropping hints for the past few weeks. I’ve given it a lot of thought, and it’s not you, it’s me. I’ve gotten too comfortable here and I need to push myself and I can’t with you. Not anymore.

MARGO
We could try working on it together?

RUTH
It’s just… there’s someone else.

MARGO
Oh.

RUTH
But I wanted to tell you, instead of just ghost you. I wanted to let you know that you’ve been the best therapist I’ve ever had. I just need a new perspective. A new voice in my head. And I don’t think I can do that with you.

MARGO
I see. Well, I do appreciate you coming to tell me in person. It’s always hard to break up with anyone, regardless of your relationship with them. This took courage, and I hope you can acknowledge that.

RUTH
It’s the least I can do. We’ve gotten me through some very rough times.

MARGO
You’ve grown a lot. I’ll be sad to see you go, but we’ve worked together to give you the tools to handle what life might throw your way.

RUTH
Yes.

MARGO
Since you’ve paid for the full session is there anything you’d like to discuss?

RUTH
Better not. I think we should leave it here.
[stands up and starts to exit]
Thank you, truly.
[leaves]

MARGO
You’re welcome.
