2022 Playwriting Every Day in November Day 30: Obsession Storytelling

Prompt: What are you obsessed with? Tell a story about it.

I’m pretty sure I have an undiagnosed disorder of some sort because I hype fixate on things very easily. Did you know that most people don’t have Taylor Swift’s Midnight on their Spotify Wrapped because it came out really close to the unknown deadline for the analysis. Well, a song off the album is in my top five… because I’ll pick one song and listen to it on repeat until I know every single word.

Eventually, years after my single obsession has faded, I’ll lose part of it - as in I can’t recall it without prompting - but if that song, that play, that episode of TV is on, you bet my mind palace is jolted awake and providing me with the lyrics, Plus all the facts I looked up while researching the meaning, the creator, and any other “fun facts”.

What is my current obsession? LDS and FLDS. Why? I dunno. But the sooner I get off my library waiting list for Under the Banner of Heaven and Prophet’s Prey, the sooner I can find a new thing to keep me up at night - hopefully something that doesn’t have such a violent history.

“Jesus loves me this I know, cause the Bible tells me so
Little ones to him belong,
We are weak but he is strong.”

GARRETT
Can you listen to any of these hymns without thinking about thinking about her?

JOSEPH
Not for a long while now.

GARRETT
I just thought things would turn out different, you know?

JOSEPH
[scoffing]
Why? Because the prophet said so?

GARRETT
You know, it would really make mom happy if you didn’t act so spitefully toward the prophet.

JOSEPH
Well, it’d make me real happy if we moved out of this compound, so I guess we’re all going to be miserable forever.

GARRETT
Not with what I heard.

JOSEPH
What?

GARRETT
Oh, it’s just, the prophet’s going to kick you out is all. For being a bad influence.

JOSEPH
Mom and pop would never allow it!

GARRETT
If the prophet told them to? You bet they would. They might even drive you out themselves.
