2023 Playwriting Every Day in November - Day 1

MAY

[closing the door]

Promise me you’ll never tell anyone what you just saw.

JUNE

I’m not sure anyone would believe me if I did.

MAY

Still.

JUNE

Alright, alright! I promise. Not sure why it’s such a big deal though.

MAY

You don’t know why it’s a big deal that my boss and your boss are kissing backstage after one of the biggest entertainment events of the decade? In one of the most Catholic countries? Where yes, it’s no longer illegal but it certainly isn’t “mainstream”? Do you know what would happen if this were to get to the press? Their careers would be over. Your boss’s before it’s really began.

JUNE

It’s really not as bad as all that anymore surely.

MAY

It’s no Sinead ripping up a picture of a pedo pope sure, but it’s the kind of thing that’ll prevent either of them from getting the Super Bowl Halftime Show.

JUNE

You’re exaggerating. Or you are out of touch with the public. Either way, Vi isn’t going to face any backlash from her fans and I doubt millennials are going to bat an eye if Jean were to come out.

MAY

You think the fans get to decide? Oh my sweet summer child, you are new at this. The people who decide what songs get played, what actresses get cast, what movies get made, none of them are “in touch” with this century. And they like it that way, and they have enough money to keep it that way.

JUNE

That can’t be true.

MAY

I would prove it to you, but the cost is too high. Just trust me, if anyone other than an assistant with a ironclad NDA had seen what we just did… I shudder to think.

JUNE

Jean made you sign an NDA?

MAY

Yes. All her staff does. Wait, you haven’t?

Of course not because your whole team is still amateurs. Give me your phone.

[JUNE gives over her phone]

Okay. I’m going to get Dara on the phone, I’m going to talk to Jean, we’re going to draft something up and you are going to sign it tonight. Then I will give this back to you.

JUNE

What?

MAY

Just stay here. I’ll be back in 20 minutes.

[MAY exits and locks JUNE in]

JUNE

[to the locked door]

Wait, May! May! What am I supposed to do? You can’t just leave me in here!

At the very least it’s a fire hazard!

May!

MAY!

Fuck. What did you get me into Vi.
