MALLORY in the interrogation room with LAWYER
LAWYER
Did you answer any of their questions?
MALLORY
No. You told me not to.
LAWYER
Good. Good. Now, they tend to look at the spouse first, but is there anything I should know that points to you?
MALLORY
He was abusive.
LAWYER
Did you ever file a report?
MALLORY
[shakes head]
He has friends on the force. I was nervous that would make it worse.
LAWYER
Doesn’t matter. Since he’s just missing under suspicious circumstances it’s already going to be hard to prove anything. They probably are just trying to put some pressure on you to see if you’ll crack.
MALLORY
But I shouldn’t answer their questions, even though I didn’t do anything?
LAWYER
Especially if you didn’t do anything. I know in all the cop shows they make it seem like only guilty people don’t talk, but really, it’s only people that don’t talk to a lawyer that do. Never answer their questions unless I tell you that you can. And even then, you almost never have to.
MALLORY
Because anything I say can be used against me.
LAWYER
Can and will be used against you. And they mean it.
MALLORY
He’d recently lost his job before he went missing, but he didn’t tell me. I found out when I got worried and called the office.
LAWYER
Do they record calls?
MALLORY
I don’t think so.
LAWYER
Do you remember who you talked to?
MALLORY
Yes. The receptionist. Charles. He’s always been very nice to me.
LAWYER
That’s good, if we need to we can call him to the stand if it comes to that.
MALLORY
They, um, they brought my old college roommate in for questioning. I’m not sure why, we haven’t talked in months.
LAWYER
I’ll look into it. Look, I’ll get a bail hearing set, we’ll get you out of here and then we’ll work on your defense. Don’t give any information to anyone. Think about the timeline and work out when things happened from the last time you saw him until you ended up here.
MALLORY
Do you think it’s possible he’s still out there?
LAWYER
I’m not going to lie, from what I read, your husband doesn’t seem smart enough to disappear. But, he also doesn’t seem dumb enough to piss off the kind of people that could make him disappear.
