2024 Playwriting Every Day in November - Day 15

It’s that time of year again where I get back in the habit of writing every day thanks to Threshold Theater in Minneapolis!

Answer to “How are you doing?” a la The Princess Bride:
Now where were we?
Oh, yes. The pit of despair!

Looking for a way to not feel so hopeless? I’m going to be posting mutual aid and nonprofits organizations that also won’t have anything to do with my writing!
Today’s nonprofit is Rebuilding Together. Rebuilding Together makes essential repairs to help our neighbors stay in their homes. They partner with local affiliates who are rooted in the community work closely with community residents and leaders to revitalize our communities. Together, they create and execute plans to address some of the needs of each specific community.
I will continue these highlights throughout the month of November so if you have an organization you’d like a shout out, let me know!

Threshold Prompt:
Day 15 - Reunions

And now for my completely unrelated writing:

For some context - I’ve looked back at what I’ve written so far as we are halfway through and I’m starting to put some structure into it, which means I’m seeing where some of the gaps are in the story. So even though I have 15 pieces of the play, it’s not in order yet. This is a bridging scene between two already written scenes.

SCENE 3
[VI and BAST on stage at an arena]

VI
Last night I sang something knew. I think the audience liked it.

BAST
The deafening cheers would lead me to have the same conclusion.

VI
But, I dunno, do you think this crowd will like it?
[Crowd cheers]
Seems like they might be on the fence.

BAST
Folks, what do you think? You want to hear the new song Vi has been working on?
[Crowd cheers louder]
What do you say, boss?

VI
Let’s give it a go!
One, two, one two three go!
[intro riff into Currently Untitled Song]
The cemetery in your backyard
doesn’t have as many ghosts as me
You say your scared of something new
I’m only scared of it ending.

I bite your lip as I bite my tongue
Don’t want you to know what I’m thinking

I feel your hand
Under my shirt
You whisper nothings so sweet they hurt
You tell me we got something special
Only when I’m naked from the waist down.

I’ve been here before
With other girls and other boys
You want me all
But just for now
You want my afterglow
Then you’ll tell me to go.

The notches on your bedpost
hold nothing to my song lines
You say you like the way I move
I like the way you keep time

Your fingers trace
My along my thighs
Blinding me to your white lies
You tell me we are meant to be
Only when I’m bent down on my knees.

I’ve been here before
With other girls and other boys
You want me all
But just for now
You want my afterglow
Then you’ll tell me to go.

In the end you’ll tell me to go
You can’t handle my afterglow.
[As the ending chord dies, the crowd becomes deafening]

BAST
I think they liked it, Vi.

VI
I think you’re right. Do we have a hit on our hands Atlanta?
[Crowd cheers and cheers]
Couldn’t agree more.
