Challenge: The Bechdel Test
FIONA is a teenage in this scene.
FIONA
I just don’t understand any of this!
MARCIA
What are you working on, Fee?
FIONA
I have chemistry homework… I don’t think what I’m doing is so much working on it as yelling at it to make sense.
MARCIA
Hmm… I don’t know much about chemistry, but your mother was very good at chemistry in high school. Come to think of it, I think she won the science fair the year she took it.
FIONA
Really?
MARCIA
Well, I’m pretty sure it wasn’t when she took physics. Maybe you can save that work until she gets home. She can probably help you.
FIONA
That would be a first. She always gets so frustrated when I don’t understand things the way she does.
MARCIA
It’s no surprise she never became a teacher… but maybe we can all sit together and she can work it through with both of us. Your mother rarely loses her temper with me. Especially when it’s about something I don’t know. I think she gets a kick out of knowing something her mother doesn’t.
FIONA
So how I feel about French?
MARCIA
My guess is it’s exactly the same. You two are more alike than you know.
