Playwriting Every Day in November Day 15

Challenge: The End

Don’t give me a happy ending
Endings are the saddest part
So give me a happy middle
And a very happy start

~Shell Silverstein paraphrased from memory.

FIONA and MARCIA sit on the front porch. Police lights and sirens surround them. They both have those blankets on that they put on victims in shock.

FIONA
I’m sorry I didn’t believe you. You were right, and I should have trusted you.

MARCIA
Aw, that’s not true. There was no reason to think I’d be right about this… this is… well this crazy.

FIONA
It is, isn’t it?
I still shouldn’t have dismissed it without at least doing some investigation. I mean if I had maybe… maybe she wouldn’t be…
(PARAMEDIC wheels a gurney covered - someone is dead.)

MARCIA
Don’t for a minute think this is your fault! You didn’t go around stabbing people!

FIONA
Still feels like I could have done more.

MARCIA
You can’t change the past. You did what you did. And I don’t fault you for it. Neither would she. And look, because of what you did do, they caught who did it! Sometimes that’s got to be enough.
(FIONA leans in to MARCIA)

FIONA
I love you.

MARCIA
I love you too. Always will.
