Playwriting Every Day in November Day 14

Challenge: Magic

FIONA is in her thirties, in MARCIA’S apartment, she’s packing up boxes, the apartment is in the half packed state of the week before a move.

FIONA
Looking back, it’s the little things. The moments of of playing with toys together as if she was just as fascinated with dolls as me. The way she would have apricot jelly because it was my favorite. The way she could turn every day moments into magic.
(She takes time with every item. wrapping and placing it carefully.)
I just, I wanted to give that back to her. The feeling that everything was magic. That she was always safe. And, I tried. I really tried.
(LAUREN, FIONA’S mother enters with a box marked kitchen.)

LAUREN
I know honey. I you did a great job.

FIONA
Then why do I feel so bad?

LAUREN
I’m sorry honey. It’s always hard when we lose someone.

FIONA
I should be comforting you. She was your mother.

LAUREN
You had a special bond with her. Let’s comfort each other.

FIONA
I just can’t believe she’s gone.
