2024 Playwriting Every Day in November - Day 3

It’s that time of year again where I get back in the habit of writing every day thanks to Threshold Theater in Minneapolis!

Day 3 Prompt: Nazi Dildo Lady

And now for my completely unrelated writing:

[THEA and OLA in bed.]

OLA
I don’t know, it feels like any time I get close to getting my music out there, I get asked to sacrifice a part of myself.

THEA
Like I said, you have to decide what you are willing to give to make your dreams happen. But I am happy that I get you for a little longer.

OLA
For a little longer? What’s that supposed to mean?

THEA
Oh, you know. Once you’re big and famous you’ll forget about little old me. You’ll probably be dating supermodels and when they ask about this time you’ll say, “oh, I was living with my girlfriend at the time, can’t remember her name but I wish her well.”

OLA
Stop it. You know I wouldn’t go anywhere without you. Making it is only making it if we’re together.

THEA
I love it when you talk loyalty to me.

OLA
Oh yeah? Well, I have more where that came from. I will never lie to you.
[OLA kisses THEA]
I will never abandon you.
[kiss]
I will follow you wherever you go for as long as you’ll have me.
[kiss]

THEA
I love you.

OLA
I love you. In case I didn’t make that clear.
[they begin to show each other their love instead of tell when OLA’s phone begins to ring. THEA, being closer, reaches for the cell.]
Leave it.

THEA
It’s your brother.

OLA
He can wait.
[The phone rings out and they get back to their performance; then it starts to ring again.]

THEA
It might be important. It isn’t like him to call this late.

OLA
You’re right…
[reluctantly takes the phone]
I’m assuming there’s some sort of emergency?
[response not heard by audience: yes, it’s dad. he’s been in a car accident.]
What? Is he okay?
[I don’t know, I just got the call from mom, she asked me to pick you up on the way to to the hospital]
Shit, okay, uh, I can be ready in five minutes?
[OLA jumps out of bed and begins pulling on ‘outside clothes.’ “I’m about ten minutes away.”]
Okay. Drive safe!
[“Yeah. See you in ten” phone call ends.]
It’s my dad he was in a car accident. Seb’s on his way to take me. Do you want to come?

THEA
Would I be a comfort for you more than I would be a stressor for your mom?
[a beat, the both know the answer]
You let me know what I can do, but I don’t think it would be a good idea to upset your mom more than I’m sure she already is at the moment.

OLA
I’m so sorry, Thea.

THEA
No, I’m sorry. I’m sorry I can’t be there for you. But I’ll be here for you, for whatever you need.

OLA
I love you.

THEA
I love you. Now finish getting ready.
