It’s that time of year again where I get back in the habit of writing every day thanks to Threshold Theater in Minneapolis!
And now for my completely unrelated writing:
[Coffeeshop stage; THEA with a guitar and mike stand]
THEA
Someone with your same name wrote me a letter
It couldn’t have been you
But I thought I better
Put my best foot forward
Act like I’m together
Just in case it was you.
Not sure what I’d even do.
Not sure if I wanted it to
be
you.
Guess we’ll never know.
[THEA steps away from the mic.]
Yeah, the levels are good. I’m going to get back to setting up now.
TOBY
Damn, Thea, I didn’t know you could sing like that.
THEA
Yeah, well, learn something new every day.
TOBY
You ever thought about asking Mr. Feste about playing a set?
THEA
Ever heard the saying don’t shit where you eat?
TOBY
It’s not like that.
THEA
Maybe not for you.
TOBY
But for real, did you ever try to get a slot anywhere? You really got some pipes.
THEA
No one says pipes anymore.
TOBY
You know what I mean.
THEA
I sing for myself. I’m not interested in giving that away for a handful of tips.
TOBY
I guess, I mean, how many of us can get as lucky as Vi Ario? I heard she played here before she got big, you know.
THEA
Really? I hadn’t heard that.
TOBY
Yeah, crazy. I mean what are the odds this place would have a second pop star come from it?
THEA
Million to one?
TOBY
Who knows, though, you might get lucky.
