2024 Playwriting Every Day in November - Day 19

It’s that time of year again where I get back in the habit of writing every day thanks to Threshold Theater in Minneapolis!

Answer to “How are you doing?” a la The Princess Bride:
Now where were we?
Oh, yes. The pit of despair!

Looking for a way to not feel so hopeless? I’m going to be posting mutual aid and nonprofits organizations that also won’t have anything to do with my writing!
Today’s non-profit is Interfaith Action. Interfaith Action mobilizes diverse faith and spiritual communities to engage in work that supports our neighbors’ stability and economic mobility.
I will continue these highlights throughout the month of November so if you have an organization you’d like a shout out, let me know!

Threshold Prompt:
Day 19 - Planning, Pride, Fright or Language

And now for my completely unrelated writing:

[VI begins to play “Wallflower” to her adoring fans and the silent reverence of the audience is palpable]

VI
I remember you
Leaning against the wall
Of that old beloved dive bar.
You lit up my life like you lit up a room
Without knowledge of how beautiful you are.

I’ve told you once, told you twice,
Told you a million times
You could be famous,
Loved by billions
Can’t believe that you are mine.

And the sun blinds me
As your vines surround me
Centerstage or behind the scenes
You’ll always steal the show.
You’re the most stunning wallflower
I know.

I wish we didn’t have to hesitate
When we want to hold hands
I want to kiss you where everyone can see
I think it’s fucked that just because
Neither one of us is a man
It’s only in secret we can be free

And the sun blinds me
As your vines surround me
Centerstage or behind the scenes
You’ll always steal the show.
You’re the most stunning wallflower
I know.

I’ll love you for as long as you’ll let me
I’ll love you longer still
You’re the moon and I’m the tides
I’ll keep coming to you, come what will.

And the sun blinds me
As your vines surround me
Centerstage or behind the scenes
You’ll always steal the show.
You’re the most stunning wallflower
I know.

[As VI strums the final chord, there is a moment of silence, then the audience goes wild.]
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you for listening. Thank you for your support. And thank you for letting me share my truth with all of you.
[darkness and silence as the scene shifts to a newsroom desk]

REPORTER
Breaking news. Multi-millionaire female icon Vi Asta sang a brand new song which she used to come out. But is she vying for a woman or just more attention. More after a commercial break.
